About Us and What to Expect
The Fishers church of Christ is an established church offering worship services to the Fishers community. We have recently been blessed to be able to procure some property and build a new worship facility. We have a core membership of seasoned Christians dedicated to expanding the cause of Christ. Our love for God and for each other strengthens us daily and inspires us to reach out to all. We believe that we are all ministers, ready to serve and be spent for the Lord.
Lanny Smith is serving as our full-time evangelist. Lanny is also presently serving as an elder. Lanny was born in Noblesville, Indiana on December 14, 1961. He graduated Noblesville High School in May 1980. About that time, he began to work for Industrial Dielectrics in Noblesville as a laboratory technician. He worked there for ten years, serving as lab technician, then lab manager. He also worked in quality control, research and development, and occasionally, as production manager. Industrial Dielectrics is a plastics manufacturing business.
Lanny married Anna Young, from the Trader's Point congregation, in August of 1982. They have one son, Cody, who was born in June of 1985. Cody currently resides in Burkesville, Ky.
Lanny was baptized into Christ in February of 1983, and preached his first sermon later that year. He did "fill-in" preaching in many congregations around Indianapolis from 1983-1990. Some of those congregations were: Castleton, Lawrence, Trader's Point, and Stilesville.
In August of 1990, Lanny moved to Kettle, Kentucky, to work "full-time" with the Hickory Grove church of Christ. He has labored there for 16 years. During that time, elders and deacons were appointed, classrooms were added to the building, and over 50 people were baptized. He published a monthly bulletin for 15 years. The bulletin was mailed out to the community as a medium of evangelistic outreach. He has worked with four other local preachers in conducting an annual tent meeting in the Burkesville area. Lanny has also written in the local newspaper, and preached on local radio. His radio work included a "preaching" format, and a "question/answer" format. During his last year at Hickory Grove, he also served as an elder of that church.
As our full-time evangelist, Lanny extends the Word of God plainly and boldly. He is not ashamed to share his faith, both in his every-day life and from the pulpit.
Periodically, we have special meetings when we invite outstanding preachers to speak for a series of special meetings. Whoever preaches the Word, you can be assured it comes from the Scriptures and no other source.
Fishers is one of the fastest growing cities in Indiana. The Fishers Church of Christ is very excited about this growth and the opportunity to share the Gospel with the Fishers community. We invite you to attend services and worship with us whenever you have an opportunity.
We know that many people are hesitant to attend worship services at an unfamiliar church. To help alleviate any apprehensions you may have regarding this congregation, we would like for you to know what you can expect when you visit our services:
Courtesy and Kindness, with a Family Orientation.
We truly welcome you as our honored guest. Expect our members to be warm and friendly, whatever your background. We are here to share with you the message of God's word, and to do it with joy.
In an age where family values are decaying, it is refreshing to know that there is a group of people who believe strongly in good moral family values. We are confident that you will find among us a group of Christians who believe families can break out of the mold the world offers, and turn to the Architect of the family, God, for guidance. Your family is among the most precious possessions you have; it's value is paramount with us also.
We believe that the Bible has all the answers to any family problem, as well as all guidance you need to deal with family problems. We would like to help you build a family based on Biblical principles.
Worship Services.
Our worship services are patterned after the simple practices of the first century church, as described and observed in the New Testament. You will find that we sing together in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Colossians 3:16). You will also observe one of the brethren leading the congregation reverently in prayer (1 Timothy 2:8).
If you are present on Sunday, the Lord's day, you will see the congregation eating unleavened bread and drinking the fruit of the vine in memory of the death of Christ (Matthew 26:26-29). We do this on the first day of the week, like the Christians of the first century (Acts 20:7). We also take up a collection of funds on the first day of the week as we see example in the New Testament (1 Corinthians 16:1-3). This congregation is supported financially by the voluntary contributions of its own members. We do not ask, nor do we expect, non-members to support our work. However, if you choose to give, we will promise you that the money will be spent only in accordance with those guidlines set forth in the New Testament.
Bible Classes.
On Sunday evenings and Wednesday evenings, we offer Bible classes for all ages. All students who have at least an average reading ability are invited to attend our Bible Lab. We are very excited about this learning environment. The Bible Lab gives each child the opportunity to learn Bible knowledge at their own level and their own pace. Each student has their own study booth. They do research, draw maps, learn time charts, listen to tapes of Bible readings, and view filmstrips.
All students use the same Bible, which is written in modern language and easily understood. Our goal is to create an atomsphere that is friendly to new students and stimulating to those who have been involved in a more traditional classroom.
Adult classes are centered around group discussion. You may join in the discussion if you wish, but you will not be singled out or embarrassed in any way. You may quietly observe and study about whatever you hear. If you do not have a Bible, we will be happy to provide one for your use.
The Bible -- Our Only Guide.
Teaching the word of God is an important part of our services. You will observe that the Bible is the textbook to which reference is repeatedly made in our sermons and classes (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Special emphasis is placed on the New Testament (Romans 1:16). You will never be asked to simply accept what someone says about the Bible; we want you to read the Bible for yourself to see "whether these things are so" (Acts 17:11). The Bible is our only guide and source of authority for everything we do. We strive to do nothing more, nothing less, and nothing else than what the Bible says.
Salvation in Christ.
At the conclusion of every service, you will hear obedience to the will of Christ emphasized as necessary to salvation. This includes: faith in Christ as taught in the gospel (Romans 10:17); repentance from sin (Luke 24:47); confession of faith in Christ (Romans 10:9-10); and baptism (immersion in water)
for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38; 22:16; 1Peter 3:21; Romans 6:3-5). If anyone responds to this message, you will see them taken to a pool of water where they will be buried in water and raised to live a new spiritual life in Jesus Christ (Romans 6:3-4).
A Church of Christ.
We are simply Christians who strive to be a church that belongs to Jesus Christ—the same church that you read about in the New Testament (Matthew 16:18; Romans 16:16). If you are interested in learning more about this kind of church, we invite you to come and take advantage of our efforts to draw closer to God. You are more than welcome at all of our services. Please come and bring your Bible to "search the scriptures" with us.
